It costs you nothing, but a good deed is done :-)

This spring we ended up in Germany, at Memmingen airport, in transit for two days. It is very conveniently located and from there it is easy to get to both Munich and Zurich. But we decided to touch the real Germany and chose the city of Ulm. Literally one hour by train and we are in a patriarchal German town.

In the Middle Ages, it was a very successful city - the second largest city after Nuremberg in all of Germany. This status is confirmed by the presence in Ulm of the world's tallest cathedral - 161.5 meters. Local residents had the opportunity and the means to show the rest who is “the coolest here”.

When we walked around the city, everywhere we were surrounded by people with ice cream, we saw entire squares filled with people with a cold delicacy in their hands. Interestingly, catering has adapted to this passion of the residents and in Ulm there are many cafes in the "ice cream + drinks" format. But, despite such popularity, ice cream is still inferior in its importance to the Bavarian white sausage, which is called Weisswurst. Whoever has not tried this culinary masterpiece can be considered and has never been to Germany. And you should try Weisswurst in an old brewery, of which there are several in Ulm. And when you drink the most delicious beer in your life, Ulm's chefs will complement the sausages with tender pork knuckle in beer sauce. And this is guaranteed to turn an ordinary dinner into a great feast for the stomach. If you find yourself in Ulm with children, then know that for them, three hundred years ago, the apple strudel, a classic dessert, was invented. You will definitely spoil your child with it.

We also remember in Ulm the balcony on the city hall, from which the mayor reports on his successes and shortcomings to the residents. Not a bad tradition that we could learn from this old town.

At the end of the political paragraph, we can share what particularly surprised us: namely, the desire of the Germans to help migrants and refugees. I was surprised, because after looking through the news feeds on this topic, you come to the conclusion that refugees have flooded Germany, and the inhabitants are just thinking how to say goodbye to them. In fact, this is not the case, the Germans are very friendly to migrants and everywhere in Ulm we saw stickers from volunteers: "If you are refugees, call here, come to this address, contact us, and we will feed, heat, and give the night."
Right next to the city hall of Ulm there is a glass pyramid that makes you feel like in Paris. In the same place, on the square in front of the pyramid and the city hall, is the traditional venue for celebrations.

We were lucky, we got to Ulm, when the "World Dance Day" was celebrated there. Both adults and children danced in this square with the active support of the audience. The impression that we made from this holiday is that German children's songs are very similar to those that we ourselves sang in kindergarten and elementary school. The “children's song” format is very similar for Germans and Ukrainians.

Another dream we fulfilled in Ulm was to see the Danube. We have heard a lot about this river, but so far we have never been able to see it. First impression: The Danube in Ulm is narrower in places than the Seversky Donets near Izium. Apparently the Danube bed is the narrowest here. But even in this case, there is entertainment for the traveler. It turns out that on one side of the Danube is the region of Bavaria, and on the other - Baden Württemberg. Having discovered this unexpected secret for ourselves, we “walked to Bavaria” and back with great pleasure.

When we arrived in Ulm, we experienced the kindness and openness of local residents. For the first time, we have booked not a hotel, but an apartment on a popular website. And it so happened that our phone battery ran out and we could not use the navigator to find an apartment. We turned to the first we met, who turned out to be a migrant from an eastern country who had been living in Germany for more than twenty years. He phoned the owner and told us in “good German” where we were, and then entertained us with all sorts of tales while the owner drove to take us to his place. When our savior heard that we did not even know the owner and were going to a stranger, he began to sincerely persuade us to go and live in his house. “I will feed and water you, my wife and children will be very glad to have guests, all this will be free for you,” he repeated and even left his business card, from where we learned that he was a gardener. But the harsh prepayment for the apartment had already been charged from our credit card and we sadly walked after the owner who had arrived on the bike :-)

These are the impressions the city of Ulm left us about itself. Kind, bright and intelligent people live here. Why smart you ask? Because it was here that Albert Einstein was born, which is the second attraction after the Ulm Cathedral. Here you will find Einstein Street and the Einstein Cafe and even the Einstein Fountain.
