On the road to Paradise
After seeing Chichen Itza, we decided that it was time to return from the selva to the Caribbean coast. We got on the bus for four hours along the road in the jungle. Driving through towns and villages, we saw people whose life was significantly different from what is found in the tourist areas of the country. Here are some atmospheric photos taken through the bus window. This is how the heirs of the proud Mayans live in the villages scattered throughout the jungle.

And now - Paradise.
The island of Isla Mujeres or in translation "The Island of Women", like many beautiful Caribbean islands, was a pirate camp. And pirates are people with a fine spiritual organization and therefore the most beautiful places for parking were chosen. This is confirmed by the fresh rating of the world's beaches from Tripadvisor , where the northern beach of Isla Mujeres is recognized as the 7th most beautiful in the world. The island's proximity to Mexico made it a convenient base for raids on the mainland, and this island helped keep pirate treasures and women at a safe distance from Indians and government officials. So the name of the "Island of Women" was assigned to the island. And we head there on a handsome ferry from Cancun, to the touching music of the ferry guitarist.

Having moored to the coast, we quickly found our hotel and rushed to the beach. The sun was already setting and this made the photos of the beach even more vivid and expressive.

We sat on the sand and were happy because there was a beautiful beach around us, bright sun and cheerful, welcoming people. Despite the fact that we "flaunted self-confidence" in front of each other in the jungle selva, each of us still worried in our hearts that the journey to this remote from civilization region would be successful and safe. And now, we were covered with joy that we were able to reach Chichen Itza on our own and now, having done this, we again found ourselves in the tourist area of Mexico on the beautiful beach of the Island of Women. The sun was setting very quickly, but we managed to capture a couple of beautiful evening landscapes of this fabulous island.

Although night fell, we were in no hurry to go to bed, as there was an active life around, lights were on everywhere, everywhere there was a smell of delicious food from restaurants and golf cars were scurrying everywhere. This mode of transport, unusual for us, is the main one on the island of women. This is what night parking on the island looks like.

And what does Leo Tolstoy have to do with it?
Our neighbors in the hotel turned out to be handsome-looking pensioners to whom we politely said "Good Evening" and "Good Morning", but suddenly in the morning grandmother speaks to us in an unusual Russian language: "I heard that you speak Russian, but I understand this a little. language". We were surprised, but gladly continued our acquaintance. And this is the story that opened before us. At the end of the 19th century, the Dukhobors religious group refused to send their representatives to the wars of the Russian Empire and were persecuted by the state authorities. Because of these repressions, the Dukhobors decided to leave the country. They were supported by Leo Tolstoy, who gave them his royalties for the novel "Resurrection". For this money, the religious brotherhood left Russia and went to Canada, where they now live and preserve their traditions and customs. Our Canadian neighbor turned out to be the granddaughter of the very "Dukhobors" who left the Crimea for Canada, thanks to the "tranche" of the great writer. At her home they spoke Russian and as she grew up she became a teacher of the Russian language in Canada, and now she spends her retirement time with her Canadian husband, traveling to different countries. Last year they spent with her husband in Vietnam, and this year they chose the isla Mujeres in Mexico. Seeing how we communicate with Nina (that was the name of our new acquaintance), her Canadian husband ran out of the room with a liter bottle of coconut vodka and tried to treat us. "Imagine, here a whole liter of such wonderful vodka with coconut costs only 70 pesos (93 UAH), and in Canada it would cost unrealistic money!" - the Canadian pensioner shared his little joy with us :-) Nina told us that she really likes it here, she loves to go swimming, read books and tries to learn Spanish. And for the whole year before meeting with us, she met Russian-speaking tourists on the island only once and they presented her with a cap. we decided to keep up with those people and presented Nina with a Ukrainian flag in memory of our meeting. This is how they got into our Mexican history: Leo Tolstoy, Crimea, "Dukhobors" and Canada.
After chatting with new friends, we went for a walk around the island. And the island is a fairy tale !!!

On one of the ends of the island, we found a beautiful villa for sale at Sotheby's. If anyone needs it, the phone number is listed near the door ;-)

Now there will be a selection of photos of the paradise beach. The photos below are clickable:

It would seem that in such a paradise nothing can disturb a wonderful pastime, but it was not there ... It is not clear where came a black thundercloud and literally in a minute covered the whole sky.

All vacationers ran to hide from the approaching bad weather under the roofs of bars and restaurants. We did the same. The approaching bad weather looked very majestic !!!

And then the storm struck! It was a real tropical downpour, like in the Forest Gump movie. It was so exciting and exciting: palm trees bent under the pressure of the wind, and rivers of water flowed from the streets bordering the beach. We optimistically asked the bartender when this hurricane will pass, but his answer did not make us very happy: "Maybe tomorrow, or maybe in a couple of days ..."

We sat in a beach bar and realized how in a few minutes the paradise that surrounded us turned into a storm. And only the interest of the "pathfinders" forced us to film what was happening around us.
Bad weather forced to explore the island.
We explored the rocky shores of the island, met the Mayan Indians with a tree on their shoulder, photographed a private villa under the vault of sunset clouds and took a "duty" photo with letters :-)

Check out a few more photos to get a feel for the atmosphere of Isla Mujeres.

The riot of nature of this island impressed two Ukrainian tourists very much.

We respect the social responsibility of the inhabitants of the island. The banner says:
"I join in ending violence against women"

We will remember the Island of Women as a place with two different temperaments at once.
On one side, a rugged island with winds and rocky shores.

But the main face of the island is the sunny North Beach (Playa Norte), reminiscent of a piece of paradise on earth, where you really want to return ...
